Every year, hundreds of thousands of new passenger cars are registered in the Netherlands. Is the average age of a passenger car in the Netherlands also low? Certainly not. In fact, the average age of Dutch cars continues to rise.

Figures from the trade organization European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) showed last year that the average Dutch passenger car was 11.4 years old in 2021. In 2019, the average passenger car in the Netherlands was still 11 years old. New figures released by ACEA on the state of the European vehicle fleet in 2022 show that the average age of the Dutch passenger car fleet has increased again. In 2022, the average age of a passenger car in the Netherlands was 11.7 years.

The average age of passenger cars in the Netherlands is still below the EU average. The average age of a passenger car in the European Union was 12.3 years in 2022. Particularly in Southern and Eastern European countries, a passenger car is on average older. For example, in 2022, cars were in countries such as the Czech Republic (15.9 years), Estonia (16.6 years), Greece (17.3 years), Hungary (14.6 years), Latvia and Romania (14.7 years), Poland (14.9 years) and Slovakia (14.7 years) are all significantly older than the EU average. In Italy, cars with an average age of 12.5 years are on average slightly older than in the Netherlands. In Spain (13.9 years) and Portugal (13.6 years), cars are also older on average.

In Belgium and Germany, passenger cars are on average 9.8 and 10 years old. In France a car is on average 10.8 years old and in the United Kingdom 10.3 years. Luxembourg has the youngest cars in Europe, the average age is 7.9 years. In Austria, just like in Denmark, cars are on average 8.9 years old. The average age has also risen slightly in many other Western European countries, except in Germany. In 2021, cars in Germany were on average 10.1 years old, in 2022 the average age was 10 years.

More figures about Europe’s passenger car fleet in 2022? Do we have. For example, there were an average of 574 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants, 6 more than a year earlier. In the Netherlands that year there were 525 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. Relatively ‘little’. The number of cars per 1,000 inhabitants is highest in Poland: 703 cars.
