The Toyota Camry is ready for Europe, but is being canceled in the Netherlands

Toyota Camry

This is the European version of the new Toyota Camry. Take a good look, because the Dutch importer no longer sees any value in this model.

The current, eighth generation of the Toyota Camry was the first Camry in fifteen years to return to Europe and therefore also to the Netherlands in 2019. Toyota apparently saw a market again for the large, spacious and always hybrid sedan. Anyone who has recently taken a taxi in Paris knows that this market is indeed there. They also like the Camry further east, so it is not surprising that the new ‘XV80’ edition appears again in European trim. The European version looks exactly like the American version presented earlier, and is actually only distinguished by design differences, the shape of the license plates and the absence of the ‘side-markers’ required in North America.

So much for the good news. The new Toyota Camry may be coming to Europe, but not to the Netherlands. In 2019, 115 were still registered, but in 2023 the total remained at 20 units. That is not enough to justify printing brochures and price lists and ordering demos, so Toyota Netherlands is pulling the plug on ‘project Camry’. The importer says that enthusiasts of larger sedans can turn to the Lexus ES, which shares its base and hybrid technology with the Camry. That car is ‘premium’ and therefore more expensive: an ES costs at least €61,895 at the time of writing, a Camry is available from €50,649.
