Unlike many others, I have no need for an iPad at all. In this article I will explain why that is the case.
Neither meat nor fish
The first iPad dates back to 2010. The iPhone had only existed for three years and was then in its fourth generation. The iPhone 4 had a 3.5-inch screen, the first iPad had a 9.7-inch screen. A big difference, which made both devices ideal for different purposes.
We have now had all kinds of formats. The smallest iPad (mini) has an 8.3-inch screen, the largest (Pro) has a 12.9-inch screen. The largest iPhone has a 6.7-inch screen and the smallest MacBook has a 12-inch screen (currently 13 inches). An iPad therefore lacks both the luxury of a MacBook, but also the mobility of an iPhone. In my opinion, therefore, it is neither meat nor fish.

I definitely don’t want an iPad
For years I have been able to do everything I want to do on my iPhone or on my MacBook. There really isn’t anything that I actually need an intermediate format for. I can do a lot of what I do on my iPhone. I always have it with me (and otherwise I also have my Apple Watch). Especially since I switched to an iPhone 15 Plus, it is great for many things. If I need a larger screen, I use my MacBook. And if I want an even bigger screen, I connect the MacBook to an external monitor. I do not need more.
Of course, I understand that modern iPads are powerful machines that are barely inferior to a MacBook. But I would rather choose a MacBook. An iPad is not really easier to carry than a MacBook and is also more vulnerable during transport. It is also less easy to hold it during use than an iPhone. If you place it on the table, you will need a stand and, if you want to type comfortably, you will also need a keyboard. None of that is necessary with a MacBook.
In my eyes, an iPad tries to be both an iPhone and a MacBook, but it can’t replace the biggest advantages of both devices for me. The combination of iPhone and MacBook is ideal and an iPad has no added value for me.

An iPad has its uses, but not for me
When I ask colleagues what they do with their iPad, the main thing I hear is: playing games! I’m not a gamer, so an iPad has no extra advantage for me in that respect. I also often hear about watching films and series. I always stream movies via a Chromecast on my TV, so I don’t need an iPad for that either. I have also heard of Garage Band, but I have been using Cubase Elements on my MacBook for a long time.
I’m very curious about what else people do with their iPad and why an iPad is best suited for that. I definitely don’t want an iPad, but maybe there are arguments that could change my mind. Let them know in the comments!
