Volkswagen ID Buzz becomes the first fully autonomous commercial vehicle

Volkswagen has been testing autonomous driving versions of the ID Buzz for years. Now Volkswagen is entering into a partnership with the Israeli Mobileye to make the ID Buzz the first autonomously driving commercial vehicle in the world.

Volkswagen showed an autonomous prototype of the ID Buzz years ago. It has already sent autonomous copies of the ID Buzz on public roads in Germany and the United States and apparently the results of the test phase are satisfactory. Volkswagen ADMT – a subsidiary of Volkswagen – announces an extensive collaboration with Mobileye. This Israeli tech company will supply hardware, software and digital maps for the autonomously driving ID Buzz AD.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz AD – as the autonomous ID Buzz is called – can find its way through traffic independently (level 4). The ID Buzz AD will have 13 cameras, nine lidar units and five radars and can therefore monitor the environment. The ID Buzz AD should be able to be used in mobility and transport services around 2026. According to the Germans, it will be the first autonomous commercial vehicle built in series production.
