‘Can you drive an iX xDrive50 when it is 31 degrees below freezing?’
Although BMW started its electric career ‘EV only’, the range now looks very different. After all, you can also order the vast majority of e-models with a combustion engine. The exception is the large BMW iX, which is a cross between an SUV and an MPV. It is available with a choice of a 71 kWh or a megalomaniac 105.2 kWh battery. Does this actually get users far in practice?
When going through the user reviews, we already discovered that drivers appreciate their BMW iX. Such articles would become very long if we also discussed consumption and range in detail, which is why we do this in this section. This gives room to zoom in on specific usage conditions and users do not disappoint us in this regard. You can even read here how far a BMW iX xDrive50 can go at temperatures of more than thirty degrees below zero!
Range BMW iX xDrive40
We kick off with the ‘entry-level version’, the four-wheel drive iX xDrive40 with 71 kWh net battery capacity. This version stayed twice at the AutoWeek editorial office. Once he was allowed to prove himself in a double test against the Mercedes-Benz EQS, where he recorded an average power consumption of 23.8 kWh/100 km and a corresponding range of 298 kilometers. Compared to the Audi Q8 e-tron, things went slightly better, with 22 kWh/100 km and 323 kilometers respectively. Both values are slightly higher than the average consumption that we extract from the reviews. A value of 20.9 kWh/100 km appears below the line, which represents a range of 340 kilometers.
In winter, consumption increases and the range decreases, a conclusion that no one is surprised by anymore. The least favorable winter value of an xDrive40 is 25 kWh/100 km, which equates to a driving range of a maximum of 284 kilometers. The best consumption we encounter in a review is 18 kWh/100 km in the month of September, which leads to a maximum range of 394 kilometers. If you want to know more about consumption, the overview of energy consumption per month made by this driver is interesting to see.
Driving range iX xDrive50
Now it’s time for the iX xDrive50, the stronger version with a net 105.2 kWh battery. This version, at least as far as user reviews go, is considerably rarer. As a result, we arrive at a less representative average of 443 kilometers and a consumption of 24.2 kWh/100 km. This means that the xDrive50 goes further than the xDrive40, but the difference is not as big as you would expect based on the battery capacity. That changes if we look at the extremes. After all, the owner did not have to write home about a maximum range of 572 kilometers (at 18.4 kWh/100 km), because that distance could simply be driven. This value was achieved at a distance of more than 100 kilometers, at a speed of 105 km/h and an outside temperature of 12 degrees Celsius.
Stress test at -31 degrees Celsius
Twelve degrees is nothing for this BMW iX, which has been exposed to much lower temperatures by its owner. “Can you drive an iX50 when it is -31 degrees below freezing?” he asks in his review. The answer appears to be ‘yes’, although it of course has a significant impact on consumption and range. “Despite a speed of up to 90 km/h on snow-covered and icy roads, this resulted in an average consumption of 29.7 kWh/100 km over a distance of 354 km,” reports the driver. Another interesting fact: “If you park the car for a while and only leave the heating on, you will see that this alone costs around 7 to 9 kWh to keep the car at the right temperature.”
