The set temperature in Dutch homes last winter was 16.9 degrees Celsius, the lowest compared to other EU countries. The indoor temperature in the Netherlands was also very low on average.
The set temperature in Dutch homes was lower last winter than in homes in other EU countries. This is evident from research by tado°, which compared the temperature of more than 650,000 households in Europe between October 1, 2023 and February 29, 2024. An average Dutch household had the smart thermostat set to 16.9° C. This is in great contrast to 2020, when the smart thermostat in Dutch homes was still on average 18.1° C. tado° is one of the European leaders in intelligent energy management for homes.
Local and international differences in temperature
In the provinces of Gelderland and Utrecht, the smart thermostat was the lowest, at 16.6°C. This was the highest in Flevoland, at 17.4°C. This figure was also highest in Flevoland in previous years, 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Belgium is in second place: on average, the thermostat in their homes was 17.6° C. The set temperature on smart thermostats was the highest in Denmark and Sweden, namely almost 20° C. Measured across Europe, the average set temperature was 18.4°C.

We estimate that tado° customers who set their smart thermostat 1° Celsius lower last year saved approximately six percent on their energy bill. Actual indoor temperatures
Although the thermostat was set to an average temperature of 16.9° C, the actual indoor temperature was higher. This has to do, among other things, with insulation and the temperature outside. Of all the countries examined, the average indoor temperature in Dutch homes in the winter of 2023 is also the lowest, at 18.4° C. Looking at the provinces, the indoor temperature of homes in Flevoland was the highest at 18.9° C. Groningen (18 .1° C) and Friesland (18.2° C) had the lowest indoor temperatures in the winter of 2023.
Here too, Belgium is in second place, with 19° C. The indoor temperature of houses was highest in Serbia (21.8° C), Slovenia and Romania (both 21.7° C).
