The popular WhatsApp application makes it possible to not only have one-on-one conversations, but also to start group conversations. Each group can do up to this 1024 members, which is a significant number. Within each group there are administrators responsible for inviting and adding members.
Members can be invited via a telephone number, but nowadays it is also possible to do this via a special link or QR code. Groups aren’t just conversations with friends; Clubs and strangers can also be part of a group. A good example of this is a group with only Wesleys or dog lovers.
Create a WhatsApp group
- Open WhatsApp
- Navigate to the ‘Chats’ tab
- Tap the plus button
- Choose the option ‘New group’
- Select the people you want to add
- Tap next

Enter the name of the group and, if necessary, add a group photo via the camera icon. Then you can use the group permissions to manage. For example, you can choose to give group members permission to edit group settings, send new messages or add other members. Disable the desired options if you want to limit this.
Return to the overview and tap ‘Create’ to create the new WhatsApp group. All participants will now receive a notification that they have been added to the group.
Change administrators
Group members can be given permission to become administrators of the group. They can then add new members and change things related to the group and permissions. The group administrator can make a group member an administrator via WhatsApp â–¸ Open the group conversation â–¸ Tap the name of the group â–¸ Scroll down to the members â–¸ tap the member you want to make an administrator â–¸ Choose ‘Make group manager‘.
Change group permissions
By default, when creating a new group, the group settings are the same for all members. This means that all members can add new members and send messages. Don’t you want this? As a group manager, you can also adjust this afterwards.
- Open the group conversation in WhatsApp
- Tap the name of the group
- Select ‘Group permissions‘
- Disable the desired options

For example, do you want only group administrators to be able to add new members? Then set the option ‘Add other members‘ out. Do you want only administrators to be able to send messages? Then set the option ‘Send new messages‘ out. This also applies to ‘Edit group settings‘; Disable this option if you want only group admins to be able to change the name, image, description, disappearing chat messages, and more for the group.
Add members to an existing group
As an administrator, and in some cases as a member, you can add members to an existing group, you can do this based on telephone number, QR code or via a special link.
- Open the group conversation in WhatsApp
- Tap the group name at the top
- Scroll down and choose ‘Add members‘
- Check the people you want to add or search for people
- Tap ‘Add’

Add members via special link or QR code
If the person you want to add is not in your contact list, you can search for or invite him, her or them using a special link or QR code. To do this, go to it group conversationtap the group name and scroll down to it overview of members. Then tap ‘Invite via link or QR code’. You can then share this link or open the QR code for direct scanning. Once the person opens the link or QR code, they will receive a notification to join the group.
Turn off notifications for groups
Group conversations always contain many messages, so you will always receive a notification. Fortunately, you can keep this quiet so that you are not constantly bothered.
- Open the group conversation in WhatsApp
- Tap the group name at the top
- Choose ‘Notifications‘
- Tap ‘Mute notifications‘

You can now select a desired period. You have the option to turn off notifications for 8 hours, a week, or even forever. This means that notifications for this group will be muted for the selected period, but you will still receive the messages and be able to read them in the group conversation; however, you will not be actively informed about it.
