1. Add effects to your messages

We’ll start these iPhone tips with a handy feature in the Messages app. With the arrival of iOS 18, you have the option to use formatting (such as bold and italics) and animated effects (such as exploding text). This is very simple: once you have composed a message, select the text to which you want to apply the effect. Then tap the icon on the right (three lines and a capital letter A). Now you can choose the effects you want.

2. Record how you feel

Number two of these iPhone tips is about another app that got an upgrade in iOS 18. And that’s the Diary-app. One of the changes is the introduction of a mindfulness option for new notes. Recording your mood every day provides an engaging way to see how it changes over time. You can simply capture by tapping the icon that looks like a small tree. You will see this icon when you create a new note.

3. Add Face ID to any app

Number three of this week’s iPhone tips provides specific security. If other people sometimes borrow your phone, you may want to extra secure certain apps. No problem in iOS 18! From the home screen you can long press an app to bring up a quick menu. In that quick menu, choose ‘Require Face ID’ to secure the app in this way. Then confirm your choice by tapping ‘Require Face ID’ again.

You can disable it in the same way, except that you choose ‘Do not require Face ID’. Of course, this is only possible by using Face ID or entering the access code.

4. Pause video recording

Number four of these iPhone tips is for the videographers among us. When you record a video in iOS 18, you’ll notice a new pause button in the left corner of the screen. Tap this if you want to temporarily stop recording. This is useful, for example, when you want to switch between scenes or zoom levels in the same recording.

5. Record audio in the Notes app

We conclude this week’s iPhone tips with a feature in the Notes app. In iOS 18 it is possible to directly add audio to the notes you save. To do this, simply tap the paperclip icon at the bottom of a note and then choose ‘Record audio’. You can then directly dictate your text and you also get text transcription in real time!
