This way you can secretly listen to conversations with your iPhone
According to Apple, the feature was originally created to help you follow a conversation in a noisy environment. But you can also use this feature to secretly eavesdrop on someone.
To listen in on conversations with your iPhone, you need a set of AirPods. It doesn’t matter which AirPods you have. AirPods Pro 2 (€ 233.95) work best, because they also have the best noise cancellation. You can also use the Powerbeats Pro, Beats Fit Pro or the AirPods Max. In addition, you must have at least iOS or iPadOS 14.3 installed on your iPhone or iPad.
Once you have done that, you must connect the earphones to your iPhone (or iPad) as you normally would. Then follow the steps below.
This way you can secretly listen to conversations with your iPhone
- Put on the AirPods or Beats;
- Open your iPhone’s Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner. Do you have an iPhone with Touch ID? Then you swipe from bottom to top.
- Tap the button with the ear icon;
- Then choose the ‘Listen live’ option.
Then place your iPhone (hidden or not) in the desired location. Your iPhone must remain close to the AirPods to be able to listen. Apple itself does not specify a maximum distance at which your AirPods will remain connected to your iPhone. But a distance of about 10-15 meters should certainly be doable.
Please note that all sound is amplified considerably. Even if you are talking near your iPhone, you can hear it very clearly through your earbuds. So make sure that you do not have the AirPods turned up too loudly when you use the function. In addition, it is wise to always check whether eavesdropping on conversations with your iPhone is ethical.
