The camera control is a new iPhone 16 button. This button sometimes causes some frustration. But with iOS 18.2 you can easily prevent that.
iPhone 16 camera control: this way you no longer accidentally press it
This year, every iPhone 16 has a smart new button: the camera control. You can control this touch-sensitive button in different ways. For example, you can press it gently or swipe over it. By default, one press of this button opens the camera app and with a swipe you can zoom in and out smoothly.

However, this button sometimes causes some frustrations. Thanks to the camera controller, the Camera app often starts automatically when you have the iPhone in your pocket. A solution is to turn the button off completely, but you don’t want that either. Since iOS 18.2, there is another way to prevent you from accidentally pressing it when you have the iPhone put away.
iOS 18.2: More camera control options
In iOS 18.2 you now have the option to have the camera control only launch the camera app when the screen is also on. When you use the iPhone, the button works as usual. It is then no longer possible for the camera app to open automatically when, for example, you have the iPhone in your pocket.

You set this up as follows.
No more accidentally pressing the iPhone 16 camera control
- Open the ‘Settings’ app;
- Scroll down and choose ‘Screen and brightness’;
- Scroll down again to the heading ‘Camera controller’;
- Turn on the slider next to ‘Screen must be on’.
