Parent company Meta wants to focus on more AI-oriented updates and that is no longer possible on these old(er) smartphones and tablets. This does not only apply to Android devices, certain (old) iPhones are also no longer supported, just a little later than the Android devices mentioned below.

Warning and solution
Do you have a smartphone that will no longer be supported from January 1, 2025? Fortunately, you will receive a notification/warning before the app stops working. If you do receive this message/warning and your smartphone is not in the list above, please check again Institutions (and search for software update or something similar) to check if you can switch to a newer version of the operating system. Otherwise, you will have to purchase a new(er) phone to continue to have access to WhatsApp. You can also find more information on the WhatsApp website.
