HBO Max has again announced changes! In March the streaming service already indicated that the subscriptions would be redesigned. These new subscriptions were accompanied by price increases at HBO Max. In the meantime the new subscriptions and prizes have started, but the changes at the streaming service do not stop there. HBO Max has announced that sharing an account will cost money.
In the Netherlands and Belgium it is currently still allowed to share your HBO Max account with people outside your household. That was also the case in the United States, but that has now changed. American users may only share their account with people within the same household. Does anyone want to use the account outside the household? Then HBO Max requires extra subscription costs.
It costs that much
Sharing an account on HBO Max costs $ 7.99 a month in the United States. For this price you can add one user to your existing subscription. It does not matter whether you have a subscription with or without advertising, with both options HBO Max asks $ 7.99 per month for an extra user. That amount comes with the monthly subscription costs of the streaming service.
The user who is added will receive his own account, password and profile in HBO Max. The streaming service does set a number of conditions, for example, the new member of the subscription must be at least 18 years old and live in the same country as the main payer. For American subscribers, it is immediately possible to add a new user to an existing account. What measures are taking to maintain the new measures is still unclear.
Consequences of the Netherlands
After Netflix and Disney Plus, it will soon no longer be possible at HBO Max to share your account free of charge with users outside your household. That currently only applies to subscribers in the United States, in the Netherlands it is not yet that time. The consequences for Dutch subscribers are not yet known, but there is a good chance that HBO Max will also ask for money here for sharing an account.
The new measures are not completely surprising, because HBO Max already announced at the end of 2024 that sharing an account will cost money. These new regulations have now started in the United States, probably other countries will follow later this year. It is expected that adding an extra member to a subscription in the Netherlands will be cheaper than 5.99 euros per month. That is the amount that you now pay monthly for the cheapest HBO MAX subscription.
