WhatsApp is working on a new privacy function. This makes it no longer necessary to share your telephone number in direct conversations.
WhatsApp gets a long -awaited position (and that is better for your privacy)
According to Wabainfo WhatsApp is currently working on a new and much -needed position for the app. With this new position you no longer have to share your telephone number to start a direct conversation, but from now on you will make contact via user names.

Instead of a telephone number, you must then choose a unique username. WhatsApp already has user names now, but they are not unique. That is not necessary, because your unique telephone number is attached.
If WhatsApp allows unique usernames, that is no longer necessary. This is similar to how it works in other apps such as Instagram or Telegram. This makes WhatsApp a bit more flexible and safer to use.
The biggest advantage is of course the improved privacy. You no longer have to share your telephone number with everyone you want to contact. Handy if, for example, you sell some things from your junk attic on Marktplaats and want to arrange the details via WhatsApp.
A username is of course also easier to remember and share. Furthermore, it becomes easier if your telephone number ever changed. After all, your unique username always remains the same.

But we must admit that this new privacy function for WhatsApp also has a disadvantage. In this way, malicious people also get more anonymity. It remains to be seen what WhatsApp will do against this.
The privacy function for WhatsApp is not yet live, in fact: even beta testers cannot get started with it yet. So it will probably take a while before the usernames become available to everyone. Yet it is nice to know that it is at least on the schedule.
More improvements for WhatsApp
WhatsApp recently provided the app with a big update. This made it possible to use WhatsApp on the iPad. The company had been working for some time on a modified application for the tablet and the test versions were already available on the iPad, but there was not a definitive version for a long time.
