Do you suddenly see a green dot appear at the top of your iPhone? That has a reason and you should sometimes not ignore it.
A green dot on your iPhone? You should sometimes not ignore that
Apple has added a handy function in iOS 14. This function shows with a colored dot whether the camera is used. So do you spot a green dot at the top of the screen of your iPhone? Then you know that there is an app that uses the camera (and possibly your microphone).

If you started an app that uses the camera, then there is nothing wrong. But if you have not done that, you have to investigate.
But how do you find out which app causes the green dot on your iPhone? That’s pretty simple! You can check that in the control panel. The control panel is the screen that you see when you wipe down from the top right edge of the screen. On an iPhone with Touch ID, wipe up from the bottom of the screen.

You will then see which app on your iPhone uses the camera at the moment at the top of the control panel. In the screenshot above that is Safari. You can then open the app and turn off the camera or close the app manually.
Camera access with apps withdrawal
Do you not like that some apps have access to your camera? Then you can also turn that off. Do that in the following way.
- Open the ‘Settings’ app;
- Scroll down and opt for ‘privacy and security’;
- Continue down and tap ‘Camera’;
- You can then indicate per app which have access to the camera.
Stubborn green dot on your iPhone
It sometimes happens that the green dot on the iPhone does not disappear when you have closed the app. Especially if you play a beta from iOS things sometimes go wrong. In that case you have to restart the iPhone. Then the problem will resolve itself.
