The iPhone 17 Pro Max is coming! Major changes are expected with this year’s pro models, so the devices get many more functions and a new design. With the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max, almost the same improvements have been expected so far, but according to new rumors that is not entirely true. Apple is working on a new camera function, which comes exclusively to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
It has been clear for some time that the telephoto lens with the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be much better. Where that with the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max is a 12-megapixel camera, this will be a 48-megapixel camera with this year’s Pro models. Now it appears that this is not the only new camera function, because with the iPhone 17 Pro Max you can allegedly zoom in much further than with other iPhones.

With the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple introduced the improved telephoto lens, with which you can zoom in up to 5 times without loss of quality. The iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max took over this camera. With the iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple probably improves this camera function, because then you can zoom in up to 8x with the telephoto lens. This improved camera can move, so that the quality remains high even with zoomed photos.
The moving telephoto lens needs more space, so that the camera function comes exclusively to the larger iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 Pro has a smaller housing and must probably do it without the improved telephoto lens. The device does get a 48-megapixel telephoto lens, but it cannot zoom in up to 8x. Instead, with the iPhone 17 Pro you can zoom in up to 5x, just like with the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max gets a more advanced telephoto lens than the iPhone 17 Pro, if the rumors are correct. It would not be the first time that the PRO models have different camera functions. For example, the iPhone 15 Pro Max was able to zoom in further than the iPhone 15 Pro. With the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max we probably see the same differences. The improved telephoto lens may also be the reason that the camera island will be much wider this year.
