The northern Breitmaulnesshorn has already died out in the wild – only two females of this species live worldwide. Natural reproduction is therefore no longer an option for you. Now the international biorescue consortium has created three new embryos of this rhino species using biotechnical methods and thus started using them in southern Breitmaulorn mothers. Could this save the species?
Despite decades of protective efforts, the population of the northern Breitmaulnesshorn (CeraTotherium Simum Cottoni) has now shrunk to just two females. Najin and her daughter Fatu live in the Kenyan Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The situation seems hopeless. Even a male of this species already extinct in the wild could not improve the situation, because neither Najin nor Fatu can get pregnant due to their age or health problems. The international biorescue consortium therefore researches the latest reproductive technologies in order to still keep the way alive.
