When you install macOS Tahoe on your Mac, widgets are automatically placed on the desktop. These mini apps give you quick access to information and are updated in the background. Do you not want this? Then you can easily remove the widgets on the desktop of your Mac.
The widgets give the user quickly access to information, such as the weather, agenda items and other useful data, and are updated in the background to always offer current content. The mini apps are interactive, which makes it a handy tool in some cases.
MacOS Tahoe automatically adds widgets
The desktop widgets are automatically added as soon as you have updated your Mac to MacOS 26. In this way, Apple may try to stimulate the use of the mini apps and inform the user of this functionality. As a user you may not be waiting for this functionality, so you can easily remove the widgets from the desktop.
Remove widgets on desktop
- Click on the widget with a secondary click (right mouse button)
- In the context menu, choose ‘Remove Widget’
- Repeat this for all widgets

Alternative place for mini apps
With macOS 26, Apple wants to stimulate the use of widgets on the desktop. In the report overview you can even read that Widgets have been given a new place. Yet you can still place mini apps in the overview.
- Click on the date and/or time in the menu bar of your Mac
- Then click on ‘Change widgets’ at the bottom
- Search for the desired widget
- Drag this to the report overview (or desktop)

As soon as you click on the time in the menu bar of your Mac, in addition to an overview of your received notifications, you also get the option to view and use your widgets. In this way you can also drag the widgets placed on the desktop to the notification center.
