5 WhatsApp functions that you have to turn on (for your own safety)

WhatsApp has many settings that make the application much safer, but you have to turn it on yourself. Therefore, quickly call in these five WhatsApp functions for your own safety!

WhatsApp functions for safety

WhatsApp adds new functions almost every week, which make the application better and safer. These settings are often on as standard, but you have to engage certain safety functions yourself. That is advisable so that you are sure that your messages, photos, videos and data will remain safe. Do you want to secure WhatsApp on your smartphone? Turn on these five WhatsApp functions for your own safety!

1. Verification in two steps

Do you want to prevent someone from logging in to your WhatsApp account easily from another device? In that case, it is advisable to engage verification in two steps. You must first enter a PIN code before you can log in to your account on another device. This is an extra layer of security that improves the safety of your account on WhatsApp. This way you switch on verification in two steps:

  1. Open ‘WhatsApp’;

  2. Go to ‘Settings’;

  3. Tap ‘account’;

  4. Choose ‘verification in two steps’;

  5. Switch on the function and choose a secret code.

You need to have worries about remembering the pin code, because WhatsApp regularly lets you re -enter the code as a reminder. About once a week WhatsApp asks for the pin code, so that you do not quickly forget the six-digit code. With this access code you improve the safety of your account in WhatsApp. You know for sure that only you have access to your WhatsApp profile.

2. Recovery email address

Do you not only want to secure your account with a pin code? You can also add a recovery email address to WhatsApp to improve the safety of your account. You can use this e -mail address to log in to your account, even if you no longer have access to your data in WhatsApp. This way you know for sure that you will always keep access to your conversations and files. Adding an email address is as follows:

  • Open ‘WhatsApp’;
  • Go to ‘Settings’;
  • Tap ‘account’;
  • Choose ‘e-mail address’;
  • Finally, add your own email address to WhatsApp.

Make sure you enter an email address that you always have access to. This address will now be used if you no longer have access to WhatsApp. In that case you will receive a recovery email, with which you can still go to your account in WhatsApp. Have you not entered an email address there? Then it is a lot harder to get access to your account in WhatsApp at a later time.

3. Protect IP addresses

WhatsApp has been offering the opportunity to make phone calls for years. The big advantage is that this does not cost a calling minutes due to the internet connection, but the disadvantage is that your IP address can be traced via WhatsApp. Someone can also find out your location with an IP address. Do you want to prevent that? Then you can also hide your IP address for your own safety in WhatsApp. This is how you turn on this function:

  • Open ‘WhatsApp’;
  • Go to ‘Settings’;
  • Choose ‘privacy’;
  • Scroll down and open ‘advanced’;
  • Turn on the switch ‘Protection IP addresses in calls’.

Have you turned on this switch? Then calls from your device are safely diverted via the WhatsApp servers. In this way it is impossible to find out your precise IP address and therefore location during a telephone conversation in WhatsApp. Note, because this can reduce the quality of the call in WhatsApp. There is more safety in WhatsApp for that.

4. Face ID (or Touch ID)

Do you really want to really secure your messages, photos, videos and other data in WhatsApp? Then WhatsApp also offers the option to improve the safety of your account with setting up Face ID or Touch ID. It depends on your device which security option you get, with the newer devices this will be Face ID. You switch on this function in the following way:

  • Open ‘WhatsApp’;
  • Go to ‘Settings’;
  • Choose ‘privacy’;
  • Tap ‘app lock’;
  • Switch on ‘requires face ID’ or ‘requires touch id’;
  • Finally, choose how many minutes Face ID or Touch ID is required.

With this feature you can no longer just open WhatsApp on your device. Instead, you must first unlock Face ID or Touch ID. This makes WhatsApp much safer, because at Face ID or Touch ID you are not dependent on a code. Nobody can watch with the unlocking of WhatsApp and possibly stealing your code. Answering messages and calls is possible if WhatsApp is locked.

5. Encountered backup

Enough private matters are shared in WhatsApp, which you probably prefer to stay private. It is therefore wise to make an encrypted backup of WhatsApp for your own safety. WhatsApp regularly makes backup copies in iCloud, but they are not encrypted end-to-end. Do you want only you to have access to the backup? Then switch on the following function:

  • Open ‘WhatsApp’;
  • Go to ‘Settings’;
  • Tap ‘chats’;
  • Choose ‘backup chats’;
  • Go to ‘end-to-end encrypted backup’;
  • Tap ‘Switch on’;
  • Select ‘Set password’ and choose a password;
  • Enter this password twice;
  • Finally tap ‘make’.

Have you enabled the encrypted backup? Then your backup is always safe, even if you lose your phone, for example. In that case, nobody has access to your backup, not even WhatsApp or Apple. The backup is secured with a password and is encrypted. Certainly if you regularly make backup copies, it is advisable for your safety to engage encrypted backups in WhatsApp.
