What is a Memoji?

Memoji is Apple’s personalized emoji feature that lets you recreate your own face or fantasy character. Each Memoji can adopt expressive facial expressions thanks to the TrueDepth camera of your iPhone or iPad Pro. This way you can not only send stickers, but also animate your character in iMessage or FaceTime.

Since iOS 18, Apple has expanded the Memoji editor with more accessories, makeup options and skin tones, making it even easier to create a themed look – ideal for holidays like Halloween.

Step 1: Open the Memoji editor

1. Open the Messages app.
2. Start a new conversation or choose an existing chat.
3. Tap the plus symbol next to the text field and choose ‘Memoji’

Swipe the window up and tap the plus button to create a brand new Memoji. You also have the option to edit or duplicate an existing Memoji. Select the Memoji from the list and tap the three dots. Then choose ‘Change’ or ‘Duplicate’. The customization window will appear, where you can choose the face, skin color, eyes, hairstyle and accessories.

You can also easily create and edit Memoji on a Mac. Open the Messages app, Start a new conversation or choose an existing chat. Click on the plus symbol next to the text field and choose ‘Stickers’. Then you can edit an existing one, duplicate it (three dots) or create a new one.

Step 2: Choose a spooky base

Start with the basics of your Halloween character.

• Zombie: go for gray-green skin, dark shadows under the eyes, freckles on the face and a disheveled hairstyle with highlights.
• Vampire: choose pale skin, sharp hair and blood red lips with dark eyebrows.
• Witch or wizard: experiment with purple or light skin tones and choose a pointy hat.
• Skeleton or mind: combine a white skin tone with dark eyes and remove visible makeup or eyebrows for a minimalist effect.

• Add a ring beard or scar. Under ‘Facial hair’ and ‘Skin’ you will find different patterns.
• Experiment with eye colors. Bright red, yellow or purple glowing eyes fit perfectly with the spooky atmosphere.
• Use the clothing option to choose black, purple or orange – classic Halloween shades.

Step 4: Set up your Halloween Memoji

Are you satisfied with your design? Then tap Ready. Your new Memoji will now be automatically saved between your personal stickers. Then you can use your Memoji anywhere and your Halloween look will remain visible wherever you send messages or make calls.

You can use it in:

• iMessage: paste it in speech bubbles or send it as a sticker.
• FaceTime: select your Memoji as a mask during video calls.
• Contact photos: set it as a profile photo for contact card or via Settings ▸ Apps ▸ Contacts ▸ Share name and photo.
• Stickers in other apps: You can also use Memoji stickers in other apps like WhatsApp and Mail.

Step 5: Extra atmosphere with effects

Make it even more fun by combining your Halloween Memoji with other iOS features:

• Usage message effects such as fireworks, confetti or lasers for extra drama.
• Add one dark mode via Settings ▸ Screen & brightness ▸ Dark.
