This is how Black Friday grew into the shopping event of the year

Black Friday has now become synonymous with discounts worldwide and has been the start of the Christmas season in the US for decades. The Netherlands is now also under the spell of Black Friday. Especially in the past ten years, it has become the shopping moment of the year. This year, Black Friday 2025 falls on November 28, but the Apple deals and competitive prices start weeks earlier.
Black Friday is becoming an increasingly longer discount period
In previous years we saw a clear trend, also confirmed by the last one iDeal figures. In 2024, the number of transactions on Black Friday itself fell for the first time since 2016 by 18.4% compared to 2023. While fewer payments were made on Black Friday itself, the number of payments actually increased by no less than 27% in the days before. This confirms that Black Friday is increasingly developing into a discount period that extends over several days.
That also makes sense: stores want to better spread the large peak crowds and also stay ahead of their competitors. That is why many online shops choose to offer temporary daily deals, discounts that are often only valid for 24 hours. This way, consumers remain curious and motivated to check daily which products can be scored with an extra discount.
Not every deal is really a deal
Not every webshop is fair during Black Friday. Some stores increase their prices just before the promotion to supposedly give a discount afterwards. This makes it seem as if you are saving, while you often pay barely less than normal.
