You might expect next year’s iPhone 18 series to consist of new versions of the 17 series iPhones, but that’s not the case.
The iPhone 18 series looks different
After a long period of the iPhone lineup looking pretty much the same every year, we saw a change this year as Apple replaced the Plus model with the iPhone Air. Meanwhile, it looks like next year’s iPhone 18 series will undergo an even bigger change.
iPhone Air 2 has been delayed
We recently learned that the successor to the iPhone Air has been postponed. Initially for an indefinite period, but now it is became clear that Apple may still launch the iPhone Air 2 in the spring of 2027. But not as part of the iPhone 18 series.
According to the report, the cause of the delay is that Apple wants to add a second camera to the back of the device. Before this change in schedule, multiple sources reported that the iPhone 18 series would consist of the iPhone Air 2, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, and the iPhone Fold.
Change iPhone 18 series
It has been known for some time that Apple wants to release the ‘regular’ iPhone 18 in the spring of 2027. This has not changed so far. If true, the iPhone 18 series will consist of just three models in the fall of 2026:
- iPhone 18 Pro
- iPhone 18 Pro Max
- iPhone Fold
This is quite a strange lineup for several reasons. Firstly, there are only three models and not four, as has been the case for years. It also means that the ‘entry-level option’ is the iPhone 18 Pro, which is of course a huge leap when you look at the purchase price. Finally, the brand new premium iPhone Fold is one of the three models. It’s not likely that this will be a massive hit, at least not right away.
iPhone 18 already in September 2026?
Not only is it a strange lineup, it will also be a huge challenge for Apple’s bottom line. It is unlikely that they will be able to match the iPhone sales of the fall of 2025 with this iPhone 18 series. That could be a reason to release the ‘regular’ iPhone 18 in September 2026. Whether that will happen remains to be seen.
