Although the AirTag 1 and AirTag 2 look almost identical, there are 5 important differences. We have listed them for you.

1. Better Accurate Search

Precise Search is a feature your iPhone uses to easily find your AirTag using haptic, visual, and audio feedback. In the AirTag 2, Apple has added a second generation Ultra Wideband chip, making Precise Search available up to 1.5 times further away than the first version.

Additionally, some Apple Watch models (Apple Watch Series 9 and later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later) now support Fine Search to locate the AirTag 2. Apple Watch support is not available with the original AirTag.

2. Improved Bluetooth

The AirTag 2 also has an improved Bluetooth chip that extends its range. Unfortunately, it is not stated exactly how much improvement you can expect in this area.

3. Louder speaker

The AirTag 2 has a speaker that Apple claims is up to 50 percent louder than the original. Thanks to this improved speaker, you can also hear the AirTag 2 up to twice as far away, according to Apple. This should make it a lot easier to find lost items.

4. Improved privacy

The first AirTag was quickly abused for unwanted tracking. Apple has tried to fix this problem over the years through software updates. Now an improved privacy has also been added to the AirTag 2.

5. Lower price

The AirTag 2 is available for 35 euros, which is cheaper than the AirTag 1 (39 euros). A 4-pack has also become a tenner cheaper at 119 euros. So you get more features for less money. The first version is already dropping in price and you can currently buy it for € 29.

Design and battery life of AirTag 1 and AirTag 2 are the same

The basic design and dimensions of the AirTag 2 correspond to those of the AirTag 1. You really have to read the fine print to see which model you have in your hands. The battery life is also the same as the new AirTag. Apple once again indicates that the battery lasts more than a year before it needs to be replaced.
