It looks like something will change at HBO Max soon and you will probably feel it in your wallet. This is what’s going on.
HBO Max is going to change (and that’s probably bad news)
After some wrangling, the decision is made, because Paramount SkyDance is going to sell Warner Bros. Acquire Discovery (WDB). At first there was talk that Netflix would buy WBD, but Paramount ultimately made a better offer.
Paramount CEO David Ellison has now revealed what will happen to the streaming services HBO Max and Paramount+. The two streaming services will go together.
However, the Paramount+ streaming service is not available in the Netherlands. Instead, the content is largely housed at SkyShowtime. But if Paramount+ merges with HBO Max (or vice versa), things will most likely change for us too.
SkyShowtime will eventually be (partially) included in the new HBO Max offering. The other way around is of course also possible, but HBO Max is the better known name so it will probably stay.
But if HBO Max suddenly also gets a large part of the SkyShowtime/Paramount content, there is a good chance that HBO Max will become more expensive. More content in streaming land almost always means a higher price. And of course you’re not looking forward to that…
HBO Max and SkyShowtime in short
HBO Max is Warner Bros. streaming service. Discovery, which has been available in the Netherlands since March 8, 2022. You can stream HBO Originals, films from Warner Bros., DC titles and children’s content from Cartoon Network. You will also find various Discovery programs there.
You can watch via your iPhone/iPad, smart TV or the web. You have access to multiple profiles, downloads for offline and (depending on your subscription) Full HD/4K and multiple simultaneous streams. There is also more and more live sports to be seen.
SkyShowtime has been available in the Netherlands since October 25, 2022 and bundles films and series from studios such as Paramount, Universal, SHOWTIME, Sky and Peacock in one app. SkyShowtime also has profiles and offline downloads. There are various subscriptions (with or without advertising, plus Premium including 4K).
