Listening to music on your iPhone, iPad, Mac or HomePod is more than just playing songs, it is of course also about the right atmosphere. With AutoMix for Apple Music or Crossfade, you can make your playlist flow seamlessly, so that a new song starts automatically while the previous one slowly fades away. No more abrupt stops, but smooth transitions as you know from professional DJ sets or radio stations.
Whether you’re having a party or just want to relax, this feature provides a pleasant, continuous music experience. In this tip we explain how to enable AutoMix or Crossfade on your iPhone, iPad, Mac or HomePod, and how to fine-tune the transition to your taste.
AutoMix for Apple Music
AutoMix is a feature in Apple Music that automatically mixes songs together like a DJ, so you move through playlists, mixes, and personal radio stations without pauses or harsh transitions. AutoMix analyzes the tempo, rhythm and structure of your songs and can, for example, cut out silence at the beginning or end, align beats and start the next song while the previous one is still playing, giving you a smooth listening experience.

The feature is available to Apple Music subscribers on iPhone, iPad, and Mac running software version 26 and newer. Automix only works with music from the Apple Music catalog and only in playlists, mixes, and personal radio stations. This function usually does not work in albums.
Differences between AutoMix or Crossfade
AutoMix and Crossfade both provide smooth transitions between songs, but they do this in different ways. AutoMix requires Apple Music and uses smart algorithms to analyze the tempo, rhythm and structure of songs. For example, it cuts out silences and starts the next song at just the right time, making it more like a real DJ mix.
Crossfade, on the other hand, is available to everyone and simply allows songs to run over each other for a certain amount of time. One song slowly becomes softer while the next becomes louder, without paying attention to the beat or structure. This makes AutoMix better for energetic, club-like transitions, while Crossfade is useful for a predictable and subtle transition without creative mixing.
Set AutoMix for smooth transitions
- Open Institutions on your iPhone or iPad
- Navigate to ‘Apps‘and open’Music‘
- Tap ‘Number transitions‘
- Enable the option of the same name
- Select ‘AutoMix‘ or ‘Crossfade‘
- Optionally, select the Blend Duration
On a Mac you can enable this via Music â–¸ Menu bar â–¸ Music â–¸ Settings â–¸ Playback â–¸ enable the ‘Song transitions’ option. Under ‘Transition Style’, click ‘AutoMix‘ or ‘Crossfade‘.

With AutoMix, songs flow seamlessly together at the perfect moment based on an analysis of key and tempo, just like a DJ. AutoMix requires an Apple Music subscription.
Crossfade for HomePod
AutoMix is currently only available on the iPhone, iPad and Mac, but since HomePodOS 26 you can also set crossfade for HomePod. To do this, go to Home â–¸ ‘Home’ tab â–¸ three dots â–¸ Home settings â–¸ Tap your name â–¸ Apple Music. Then enable Crossfade and determine the number of seconds for the transition.
