The different modes of the iPhone Duo
Thanks to the sturdy hinge of the iPhone Duo, it is possible to use the device in different positions and orientations. Below is an overview:
- Closed position (Compact): When closed, you can use the 5.4-inch outdoor display. Ideal for quickly typing a message, viewing a notification or navigating with one hand. In portrait orientation (upright) you get a classic app view, while landscape offers more space for media and entertainment apps.
- Open (Tablet mode): When fully unfolded, the Duo turns into a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display. This offers more space for internet use, document editing and gaming. Apps automatically adapt here and use the entire space with extra buttons, menus and more. Split View is also available. Rotate the Duo a quarter turn to use it in portrait orientation and activate the traditional iPhone view.

- Flex position (L-shape): By opening the device halfway and placing it on the table, the screen is divided into two parts. The bottom half acts as a stand or control panel, while the top part shows the content.
- Tent position: Place iPhone Duo on a flat surface like an upside-down “V.” This is the perfect stand for watching videos or giving presentations on the outdoor screen without the need for a case or holder.
How apps respond to the different modes
Apple offers developers extensive APIs that allow apps to automatically adapt to the device’s orientation. In addition, Apple’s own apps make optimal use of the entire screen in all situations.
- Continuity between screens: If you start reading an article on the outer screen and open the Duo, the app immediately scales smoothly to the large inner screen without loading time or jumping parts.
- Split View multitasking: In the open position, you can easily run two apps side by side. For example, you can have your Mail open on the left and drag an appointment directly into your Agenda on the right.

- Dynamic interfaces in Flex mode: As soon as you bend the phone halfway, the app layout adjusts. In the Camera app you see the viewfinder at the top and the camera controls and recent photos at the bottom. With video services such as YouTube or Netflix, the video slides to the top screen and you will find playback controls and comments at the bottom.
- Duo Preview in the Camera appp: Are you taking a photo of someone else? Then the outside display shows a live view for the model, while you frame the shot on the inside screen.
The biggest advantages of the Duo concept
The biggest advantage of the Duo concept is that you always have the productivity and viewing convenience of an iPad in your pocket. In addition, the advanced hinge makes separate accessories such as tripods or phone holder cases unnecessary. Because you can place the device half-open on the table at almost any desired angle, hands-free video calling via FaceTime or recording stable videos becomes easier than ever. You can also easily place the device wherever you want to watch series or films.

Finally, the design takes photography to the next level. If you take a photo of someone else, they can immediately see live what the photo looks like via the outdoor screen. In addition, you can easily use the outer screen as a viewfinder in Flex mode, allowing you to take razor-sharp selfies and vlogs with the powerful 48 MP main camera instead of the less advanced front camera.
