In iOS 27, Apple has improved Wi-Fi assistance, so your iPhone can better handle a poor Wi-Fi connection. Previously you could only switch this feature on or off, but now you can set exactly when your device can switch to 4G or 5G. This ensures that your connection remains more stable while streaming, video calling or working from home, without you having to intervene every time your WiFi connection is bad.
The biggest change is that you can now set WiFi assistance per WiFi network. You can indicate whether your iPhone can use mobile data in addition to WiFi, per network. For example, you can disable this feature on your home network to save data usage, but enable it for specific public WiFi networks for a better internet experience on the go.
WiFi assistance for iPhone
Wi-Fi Assistance (renamed in iOS 27 to Assistance with connectivity) causes your iPhone to automatically use cellular data if your Wi-Fi connection is weak or unstable. Instead of switching completely, iOS 27 can combine Wi-Fi and cellular data to make your connection more stable while browsing, streaming, or video calling.

The function prevents apps from becoming slow or freezing as soon as your WiFi signal drops, for example at the edge of your house or in busy networks. Keep in mind that this can use up your data bundle faster, especially if you often use public WiFi with poor coverage.
Set up Connectivity Assist per network
In iOS 27, Wi-Fi Assist has been moved from the Cellular Data settings to the Wi-Fi menu and renamed Assistance with connectivity. In addition to the global switch, Apple is now introducing an additional option per WiFi network to determine whether your iPhone can combine mobile data with that specific network.
You will find this new setting behind the network name via the i icon, where iOS 27 shows additional network details and options. For example, you can equip your home network with a ban on mobile data, while allowing public networks such as in the train or cafe to work with 4G or 5G.
- Open the app Institutions on your iPhone
- Tap WiFi for the list of available networks
- Make sure you connected are with the WiFi network you want to adjust
- Tap the i button right next to the network name to open the detailed settings
- Then enable the option ‘Use assistance with connectivityon or off
- Repeat this for all networks

Enable the option on networks that you know are unreliable, such as WiFi on the train or in a busy cafe, so that your iPhone can quickly catch up with 4G or 5G.
Control your data usage
With the option to set up Wi-Fi assistance per network, you can avoid unexpectedly high data usage in locations where your Wi-Fi already works well, such as at home or at the office. At the same time, you have the advantages of a more stable connection on weaker or busy networks, such as on the train, at the campsite or in hotels.
For users with limited data bundles, this offers an excellent balance between comfort and control: you don’t have to disable the entire function to protect your bundle, but can set per network when your iPhone can jump in.
