Porsche thinks aloud about model under 718

For years, the Porsche 718 (Cayman and Boxster) has been the most affordable sporting choice that Porsche offers. Previously, however, there were more real ‘budget Porsches’ and the company does not exclude ever coming back with it.

Porsche’s range of models becomes fuller and fuller. In addition to the iconic 911, we now have the 718, the Panamera, the Macan, the Cayenne and the Taycan. Although the Macan is able to attract a wider audience to the brand, it still lacks a sporty ‘budget model’. Think of a spiritual successor to the 924 or the 914, in the past, the Porsche customer base grew. Porsche is thinking aloud about getting back into the water again.

In an extensive interview with Porsche designer Michael Mauer, the brand looks back on the 914. In addition, Mauer is asked how he views ‘a future 914’. “We often talk about this: an entry level model from Porsche. I think that is very interesting, but the opinions are still divided as to what kind of car it should be,” he explains.

Mauer sees two options; a car that is not that cheap, but offers the purest possible driving experience without electronic aids, or a direct Audi TT RS competitor. From his own perspective, Mauer sees the most in the first option, but not so much in a ‘budget model’: “From a sales point of view, a much cheaper entry-level Porsche would be the right choice, but that is not my choice. A purist car who goes ‘back to basics’, I think the time is right for that. “
