Driving licenses that expire before December this year will remain valid for longer. This is reported by the Centraal Bureau Rijvaardigheidsbewijzen. The exception is made because of the situation with the corona virus.
Normally, depending on the category, a driving license must be renewed five or ten years after it has been obtained (or renewed earlier). An exception will be made for people who are affected between 1 February and 1 December this year. That makes the CBR known. The driving license remains valid for nine months after the expiry date. This also applies to professional drivers with Code 95. An even shorter extension was announced earlier.
The exception can be made now that the European Commission has approved this request from the Netherlands. The reason for postponing the mandatory extension is obvious. According to the CBR, it is not possible for some people to renew their driving license due to the coronavirus. Consider, for example, (often older) people who need a re-examination. Anyone who has an expiring driving license within the set period can therefore continue to drive within the EU for the time being. In the run-up to December 1, it will probably be considered whether further extension of this exception is necessary.
