New Renault 5 unplanned, created in six months

The retro Renault 5 Prototype knows how to loosen up tongues. Overall, the electric newcomer is warmly received. A potential golden move from Renault, but according to CEO Luca de Meo it is a car that was actually not planned.

The year is still young, but to date the Renault 5 Prototype is the absolute stunner of 2021. The mischievous retro Frenchman brings back the necessary memories and the production version promises to be a striking ‘new’ face on the public road. According to CEO Luca de Meo, however, it would not have been much of a difference or he would not have made it. It appears that De Meo, who took office last year as CEO of Groupe Renault, has spurred his company to come up with this. “This project was not in the pipeline, it came about in the last six months. It went fast, but now it is in the production planning. This is one thing that comes from courage within an organization,” quotes AutoExpress. To get an idea of how fast it went: the design is by Gilles Vidal, who indeed only made the switch from Peugeot to Renault about six months ago.

It can therefore go quickly and according to De Meo, that also applies to the production plans for the new Renault 5. Renault will launch fourteen new models up to and including 2025, half of which will be fully electric. The 5 is one of them. We can expect this in the showroom before 2025, according to De Meo. According to the CEO, the car sits on the CMF-B platform on which the Renault Zoe is standing and it therefore seems that the 5 will be the successor to the Zoe. More great news for lovers of historical models; there is another retro Renault 4 on the way, which will be one step lower in the market.
