In addition to the previously published Devolo Magic 2 WiFi, Devolo recently launched the Magic 2 LAN triple. As the product name indicates, this powerline set contains three ports for connecting network equipment. Favorable in case you prefer not to pay the extra price of the previous model with WiFi mesh. The theoretical throughput of 2400 Mbit / s remains unchanged, although you will not achieve that in practice due to all kinds of limitations of the electricity grid.
Configuration
Devolo provides a manual with clear instructions. For example, it is not the intention to plug the so-called triple adapter into a socket. Instead, pierce the plug directly into a wall outlet. In addition to the triple adapter, the starter package includes a base station, which you connect to a router via an Ethernet cable. Once connected, it takes about three minutes to exchange security keys. As soon as the lights on both powerline devices are constantly white, the network connection is active. The devices are quite large in size, which means that the housing may be in the way of a nearby power outlet. Fortunately, each unit contains an integrated electrical outlet to which you can connect a socket, for example.
Network performance
The electricity grid of every house differs. For that reason it is a matter of trying out the network speed that can be achieved over the mains. That can be better than expected. If you stay within the same electricity group with the powerline devices, the speed is generally better. We put it to the test and position the base station downstairs in the living room near a Ziggo modem / router. We then connect the triple adapter in the attic. The signal enters the attic room via two electricity groups, whereby we measure a speed of 16.49 Mbit / s. This is sufficient for light internet tasks and, above all, the connection is stable. You can expand the powerline network with optional adapters if required.
Conclusion
Anyone who wants to add network connections to a (bed) room in an easily accessible way is at the right place with the Magic 2 LAN triple. The configuration is extremely smooth and the network performance is good. However, the housing is quite large and you do not know in advance what speed the powerline set reaches. Moreover, Devolo uses a solid price for this product.
