A good amount of storage space on your Mac is taken up by ‘other storage’. But what exactly is this and how can you remove it? iPhoned shows how it works.
Delete other storage on your Mac
A huge amount of data is stored on the Mac, but it is not always clear what kind of files are involved. In addition to apps, photos and films, Apple also places a large amount of data under the ‘Other’ category. On the Mac, these are often documents, plug-ins, system data and cache memory stored by installed apps. The files are not harmful, but they take up a lot of storage space.
Just go to ‘Finder> About This Mac> Storage’ to see exactly what you have on your Mac. You will see that a large part is taken up by ‘Other’. For the undersigned, this is even a quarter of the total amount of storage space. Fortunately, there is a way to delete other data from your Mac, so that you can free up more space for other files. We explain how to do this in the steps below.
- Click on your desktop or activate Finder by clicking on the icon;
- In the menu bar at the top, press ‘Go> Go to folder…’. You can also use the key combination Shift + CMD + G;
- Type ~ / Library / caches in the text field and press ‘Go’;
- You will now see the folders of all installed apps.
In the last step, make sure you are not deleting the folders of system applications. We recommend that you only delete data from apps that you no longer use or have already been removed from your Mac. This will quickly free up a lot of space. Make sure to permanently delete the data by emptying your Trash.
