New on Netflix: July 2017
The Netflix offer is not fixed. New films and series are added every month and titles are regularly released. Every month we look ahead at the new offer on iPhoned and then pick the best for you. These can be older films and series that just appear on Netflix, or brand new titles. All you have to do is sit back and hit play. Our New to Netflix guide keeps you up to date with essential series and movies on the streaming service every month.
1. The Incredible Jessica James
A new Netflix film will be released in July, which received rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The Incredible Jessica James is about an aspiring playwright trying to make ends meet with a job in catering. In addition, she (Jessica Williams) tries to recover from a relationship that has gone wrong and she meets the newly divorced man Boone (Chris O’Dowd). The spark soon ignites.
Airing on Netflix from 28 July
2. To The Bone
To The Bone promises to be a moving film. It is about Ellen (Lily Collins) who has to contend with anorexia, from which she suffers more and more. She is treated and meets a doctor (Keanu Reeves) who tries to convince her to get more out of life.
This is a special and personal film by director and writer Marti Nixon, who also developed an eating disorder in her youth. The same goes for the lead actress. Because of this you are waiting for a realistic and quite intense film.
Airing on Netflix from 14 July
3. Friends From College
This month we can also expect a Netflix series: Friends From College. It is a comic series by Nicholas Stoller (known for Get Him to the Greek, Yes Man and The Muppets) and his wife Francesca Delbanco. The story is about a group of friends who know each other from university. They are now a lot older, but do not always want to behave like adults.
The first reviews are somewhat divided, but the names of the actors make us curious. Among them are Coby Smulders (How I Met Your Mother), Keegan-Michael Key (Fargo) and Billy Eichner (Parks and Recreation).
Season 1 can be seen on Netflix from July 14
4. Southpaw
Ready for a boxing movie? Southpaw tells the story of fighter boss Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal), a man with a good life, impressive career and nice family. Only his behavior gets in his way, causing everything to fall apart. He then tries to get his broken life back on track via the boxing ring.
It is a boxing movie by the book. Jake Gyllenhaal trained hard for the role, which can be seen in his muscular physique. Southpaw was directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). Forest Whitaker and Rachel McAdams can also be seen in the film.
Available on Netflix from 1 July
Sherlock (season 4)
If you missed Sherlock’s latest season on the BBC, you can still watch it on Netflix from this month. The three new episodes are again of top level. Benedict Cumberbatch returns as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman plays his assistant John Watson. The fourth season is one of the best seasons of the series so far, but the other episodes can also be viewed on Netflix.
