Typing in questions to Siri instead of speaking: that’s how it works

You can quickly reach Siri on your iPhone by saying ‘Hey Siri’. However, talking out loud to your phone doesn’t always work out. Fortunately, you can also just type in questions to Siri. In this tip we explain how this works.

Siri typing questions instead of speaking

Siri is a voice assistant, but you can also ask questions by typing. All you have to do is activate the function in the settings. In this way, accessibility is increased, because it allows people with a speech impediment to use Siri. However, this feature also comes in handy if you simply prefer to type rather than speak to the voice assistant out loud.

Typing in questions to Siri instead of speaking: that’s how it works

Here’s how to type Siri questions:

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Tap on ‘General’;
  3. Select ‘Accessibility’;
  4. Search for Siri;
  5. Set the switch behind ‘type questions to Siri’ to green.

Once you’ve completed the steps above, you can activate Siri simply by pressing and holding the home button (or the side button on the iPhone XS and iPhone XR). Then the familiar Siri screen and a keyboard will appear where you can ask your question. As long as you stay in this window, it is possible to use Siri without saying a word. Handy if you are on a crowded train or in a library.

This way you can silence Siri

The problem with this is that Siri just speaks the answers to these typed questions. You can also prevent this in the settings. You do this by going to ‘Settings> General> Siri> Spoken feedback’. Select in this menu for ‘Control with ring signal switch’.
