An overheated iPhone: 6 tips to prevent and solve this

It is warm in the Netherlands. If your phone is in the sun for too long, your iPhone can overheat, causing certain functions to (temporarily) stop working. With these six tips, your iPhone will keep a cool head.

This is how you prevent an iPhone from overheating: 6 tips

If you leave an iPhone or iPad in bright and direct sun for a longer period of time, there is a good chance that the message ‘Temperature’ will appear on the screen. Then your device has to cool down for a while before you can use it again. Very annoying, but the security mechanism is designed to prevent or limit damage to the device.

An overheated iPhone: 6 tips to prevent and solve this

Your iPhone works best between 0 and 35 degrees and does not like being in an enclosed space like your car’s glove compartment. After all, in direct sunlight, the temperature in a car can quickly rise to over 40 degrees, with all the consequences that entails.

Your Apple device can also overheat if it is not in the sun, but you have accidentally forgotten to turn off a camera or navigation app. This causes the unit to become very hot, which in some cases also causes the Temperature screen to appear.

My iPhone has overheated, now what?

If your iPhone gets too hot, a security mechanism is automatically triggered. This ensures that you can temporarily not charge the iPhone, the flash of the camera does not work or certain connections are stopped. It may therefore happen that you are less accessible during this period.

It usually takes 15 minutes for the device to cool down again. You do this by simply putting the iPhone in the shade. So do not work with ice cubes, refrigerators or cold water, because that is not necessary.

Is the Temperature screen not yet visible, but your iPhone is very warm? Then prevent your iPhone from overheating with the following quick tips:

  • Take the iPhone out of the sun and put it in a cool place in the shade;
  • Do not play games or use other intensive apps. This can cause the temperature to increase further;
  • Temporarily turn on Airplane mode to minimize the load on your iPhone;
  • Turn off your iPhone completely for a while to speed up the cooling process.

This will prevent your iPhone from overheating

Prevention is better than cure, of course, and that includes an iPhone overheating. Below we have highlighted six tips that will help you.

1. Keep your iPhone out of the sun

In hot weather, prevent your iPhone from coming into contact with direct sunlight, a hot (leather) chair or table, or other materials that heat up quickly (such as metal). Especially when it comes to longer periods, it is harmful to leave the device on a certain surface for too long.

2. Remove the cover

If you charge your iPhone, remove any case. Also make sure that your iPhone is not in the sun when you charge it, but preferably in a cool place.

3. No counterfeit charger

Always use the original charger! A cheap counterfeit charger can cause your iPhone to become extremely hot while charging. Or worse, the charger catches fire.

4. Close apps

Close all apps and wireless connections that you are not using. Bluetooth, WiFi and demanding apps (such as the camera or navigation) ensure that your iPhone heats up faster.

5. Turn off the display

If you use navigation, but you do not need the instructions on the screen, switch the display off. The screen is one of the largest energy consumers of your iPhone and a lot of heat is generated. It is therefore better to turn the screen off completely if you do not need an image.

6. Airplane mode

If you don’t need your iPhone at all, turn on airplane mode or turn off the phone completely. You protect the battery and prevent your iPhone from overheating.
