Almost every browser keeps track of which websites you have visited in recent weeks. For privacy reasons, it is wise to clean your browser history once in a while. With Safari you don’t have to do this manually. You can have your history automatically cleaned up by the browser. We explain how to do that.
Launch Safari from your Mac and navigate to the menu bar. click on Safari and go to Preferences. Under the tab General you will find the option Remove items from history and click on the drop-down menu. You then have the choice to have your history deleted every day or every week, month or year. Every other week is also an option. For example, do you choose after two weeks Safari will keep your data for two weeks. Anything outside of two weeks is removed every day. Think not only of your browser history, but also search results and other web data, for example.
You can also switch back to manual via the drop-down menu, so that you can decide for yourself when you want to clear your browser history.
Delete download list
At the bottom of the tab General you will also find the option Clear download list. All files that you download from the internet are placed in a temporary folder and you can also have this folder automatically cleaned, for example every day or every year, but also every time you close Safari or if the download of a file is ultimately not successful. successful. Keep in mind that it won’t delete the files you’ve downloaded – only the download list will be cleaned up.
Not on mobile devices
Safari history on other Apple devices, such as your iPhone or iPad, will not be erased via said method on your Mac. The option to automatically remove items from your history is currently not available in the iOS and iPadOS versions of Safari. You will have to do this manually.
You can also automatically clean up your download list on your iPhone or iPad. To do this, go to the Settings app and search for Safari. Tap the tab General on Downloads. Here you will find the option Remove items from the download list. By default, items are removed from the download list after a day, but you can also change this to after the download is successful. There is also the option to manually remove the parts.
