Genesis announces more about European G80 and GV80

Genesis will soon start selling cars in some European countries. Now the first powertrains and prices of the G80 and GV80 are known, which gives us a bit of an idea of what we can possibly expect here.

Genesis begins its European adventure in Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. For the latter two countries, the brand now announces which powertrains will be available for the G80 and GV80. The British prices of those two top models have also been announced. Although that does not give any guarantee for a possible Dutch price tag, it does provide an interesting insight.

G80

The Genesis G80, the sedan with which Genesis hopes to eat cheese from the bread in cars like the Mercedes-Benz E-class and Audi A6, is the ‘cheapest’ of the two. In the UK it will be available from just under € 43,500. The British will get the G80 with a – probably – 210 hp 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine, linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. In comparison: a Mercedes-Benz E 220d is about € 3,000 more expensive in the UK. The standard four-wheel drive petrol version of the G80 has a blown 305PS 2.5-liter four-cylinder under the hood, also has the eight-speed automatic and costs at least € 50,000 in the UK. In the UK, the price is roughly € 3,000 below the Mercedes-Benz E 300e, although the Mercedes is of course a slightly stronger plug-in hybrid.

GV80

The Genesis GV80, the SUV next to the G80 in the showroom and targeting cars like the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, is a lot more expensive in the UK than the G80. This has undoubtedly to do with the larger engines, because the 2.2 diesel of the G80 passes the GV80’s nose. The GV80 is also always four-wheel drive. For the GV80, the price list starts with a 278 hp 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo diesel, again linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission, with which the GV80 costs at least € 66,000 converted. This is an illustration, you guessed it, about € 3,000 below the British starting price of Mercedes-Benz GLE 300d. The GV80 with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine is also converted from around € 66,000. In terms of powertrain, it is best comparable to the slightly stronger BMW X5 xDrive40i and costs almost the same in the UK.

It is still a bit difficult to compare, but the first impression is that Genesis is not extremely far away from the competitors in terms of prices. Perhaps a plus for Genesis is in the equipment, because in both cases it concerns the ‘Premium Line’. That name suggests that there are one or even more equipment levels below. Furthermore, in the event of a possible Dutch market introduction, it is to be hoped that milder variants or partly electrified variants will be introduced, since the above-mentioned powertrains will entail quite a blow bpm. What gets especially interesting for us is whether Genesis is bringing the electric G80 this way. For the time being, however, nothing is known about Dutch plans.
