Stop motion videos are videos in which photos are pasted one after the other, creating movement for the human eye. You can make such videos yourself with your smartphone by downloading a good app for it. In this article we therefore look at Stop Motion Studio.
Stop Motion Studio is a free app you can download for android and iOS. The app is basically free. However, if you want access to extensive functions, you have to pay 5 or 6 euros respectively for the full version of the app. Do you do this purely for fun or do you want to try out stop motion, then you will be fine with the free version.
Before we highlight the app, we have two more general tips. It is therefore a good idea to buy a tripod for your smartphone. This way you can be sure that every photo is taken at the same distance and from the same angle. It is also useful if you operate the camera app with a remote control, so that you do not have to mess with the touchscreen and there is a chance that the camera has moved compared to the previous photo. However, all this is not mandatory.
Create stop motion video with Stop Motion Video
After downloading and installing the app (don’t forget to grant the necessary permissions), press the big plus sign to start a new project. You will then end up in the video editor. On the left you see a number of buttons.
The buttons are as follows (from top to bottom): Back, Voice over, Add and Settings. In the middle is the viewfinder, with which you make the images, while the timeline is displayed at the bottom. On the right are also some buttons: Capture, Undo, Help and Play.
By tapping the camera icon (Capture), take the first picture of the project. Then more options will automatically appear. On the left are the buttons for Overlay, the transparency of that overlay and the grid. The buttons are on the right Back, Timer, Capture, Play and Settings. It is a good idea to check the settings in advance, so that you can immediately make the right stop motion videos that you have in mind.
The principle of a stop motion video is that objects or people move with a single frame of movement at a time. So you have to make the object in the image weigh a little bit every time, to conjure up a natural movement. You can often skip frames for a funny effect, but of course that depends entirely on the type of video you want to make. At least take a new photo for every movement by clicking Capture tap (big red button).
Press after every photo press play to see the result. At the bottom, where the timeline is, you also get access to an overview of all photos taken so far. By tapping on a frame, you can remove or replace it. But the app offers even more functions, which appear neatly on the screen after you tap on that frame.
Are you happy with your video? Then go back to the overview of created videos, press and hold the video in question and select the share icon. There you will find the option to export your video. You can then download the file or use it as a gif.
