Electric cars are increasingly not allowed to be parked in the parking garage under an apartment complex, the AD reports. Fear of persistent fires is cited as the reason.
That fear flared up (…) after an electric car violently turned to ashes in a parking garage last year. The AD reports moreover, that the fire brigade has warned about these types of fires.
That has not missed its effect. In response to the warnings, many Owners’ Associations (VvEs) would reconsider whether EVs are allowed in the garage under an inhabited building. Even if there is no real ban, it is doubted whether it is wise to have these cars charged underground. According to Kees Oomen of the VvE Belang foundation, there are even cases where charging stations that have already been installed have been disabled again.
Whether electric cars catch fire more often than other cars is still being investigated. It is clear that putting out an EV is a difficult job, because the fire keeps rearing its head. An alternative could therefore also be to park the car in a pit that can be filled with water in case of emergency, although that is easier said than done.
