The JLab Go Air earphones are nice and no-nonsense. For a few bucks you have in-ears of a compact size, a light weight and interchangeable rubber tips, so that they are suitable for almost every ear. There is no app, no noise cancellation and no ambient sound mode. Here in the Netherlands, the JLab Go Air is available for 40 euros, which is a crazy price, since you can already get it on Amazon for 25 dollars or 30 pounds. Before you buy the earphones, it is therefore recommended to keep an eye on the sales price and compare.
Charging box
The most striking thing when you compare the JLab Go Air with other wireless in-ears is that you put them away in an open charging case. When you take the earphones out of the box, they only make a bluetooth connection with your device. Small magnets ensure that the earbuds stay in place. It is not really pleasant, a lockable charging box keeps the earphones in place better. It is possible that the earphones in your bag or pocket fall out of the box, so that they do not charge. Or worse, lose it. Or more annoying: when the earphones get out of the box, they automatically connect to your smartphone. As a result, a separate earpiece in your bag can prevent you from hearing phone calls, notifications and other audio from your smartphone.
It is also striking that the charging box itself has a cable and USB-a plug. To charge the box yourself, connect it directly to the adapter. Not a big disadvantage, but a USB-C slot would have been nicer and more practical. It is not possible to charge the charging case wirelessly and has enough battery capacity to charge the earphones almost four times. The JLab Go Air earphones themselves last about four hours when charged.
wearing comfort
Where the JLab Go Air excels is the wearing comfort. The ears weigh very little and are small in size, so you hardly feel that you are wearing them in your ear. Of course, it also helps that you adjust the fit to size with the exchangeable rubber tips.
The earphones fall into the lower price segment and of course you can hear that a bit in the sound quality that the earphones offer. Nevertheless, compared to their peers, they look good. Brands like Skullcandy often try to overcompensate with a pumped-up bass sound with cheaper earphones. That is not the case, the high, middle and low tones are well balanced. But the details fall away a bit, so music sometimes sounds a bit tinny.
There is no app available to adjust the sound with an equalizer. But if you tap the earpiece three times, you can switch the sound mode. In addition to the standard sound mode, you have a bass-boost mode and a balanced mode at your disposal. I personally found the optimal setting to be the standard setting.
Where the JLab Go Air excels is the wearing comfort
Alternatives to the JLab Go Air
The JLab Go Air earphones have an excellent price-quality ratio, offer a nice sound quality for the price range and wearing comfort is the strong point of these earphones. However, the design of the charging case is a serious drawback, making earphones from other brands perhaps a better choice for those who often take their headset (including box) with them in their bag and pocket. However, other earphones in this price range do not offer the comfort and sound quality.
Especially for its price, you will not regret the JLab Go Air, especially if you pick it up for about 25 euros, instead of 40 euros. The price difference between Dutch and foreign webshops is strange in that regard.
Conclusion: buy JLab Go Air?
You will not soon regret purchasing the JLab Go Air. The sound quality is acceptable enough for its price range and the wearing comfort is fine. The possible concern is in the charging box, which is ill-considered to say the least due to its open design and USB plug.
