The launch of the iPhone 13 is imminent and so the question is: what is Apple doing with the camera? In this article we list our main expectations.
Read on after the ad.
This is how Apple is going to improve the camera of the iPhone 13
Only a few more weeks until Apple announces the iPhone 13. The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will probably all get a direct successor. We do not expect a ‘new’ model this year.
Apple keeps its jaws shut as usual. Fortunately, the rumor mill is working overtime, so we can share some expectations about the camera, or rather cameras, of the iPhone 13. How will Apple improve this important part of the iPhone?
iPhone 13 (mini)
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini have the exact same cameras. We assume that this also applies to their successors. We don’t think Apple is on the set up will tinker. This means that the entry-level models have three cameras: two on the back and one on the front. This is what we expect from the iPhone 13 (mini) camera:
- 12 megapixel primary camera
- 12 megapixel ultra wide-angle lens
- 12 megapixel selfie camera
That sounds a bit boring, but Apple is probably going to tinker with the cameras. There are rumors that the iPhone 13 will get improved image stabilization. It sensor shiftsystem from the iPhone 12 Pro Max would come to all new iPhones.
As a result, your photos are moved less quickly and you can take better pictures in the dark. The iPhone 13 and 13 mini may also have a better wide-angle lens, which lets in more light. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if this feature is reserved for the Pro models.
Another cool feature is that the iPhone 13 could shoot videos in portrait mode. This makes it possible to blur the background. This has been possible with photos since the iPhone 7 Plus from 2016.
iPhone 13 Pro (Max) camera
Today’s largest iPhone, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, has better cameras than the regular iPhone 12 Pro. We’re not sure, but many analysts expect the Pro models to feature exactly the same lenses this year.
That’s not a bad idea, since the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max were also equal in camera area. We expect the following cameras on the iPhone 13 Pro (Max):
- 12 megapixel primary camera
- 12 megapixel ultra wide-angle lens
- 12 megapixel telephoto lens
- Selfie camera of the 12 megapixel
That’s the same collection of cameras as on the iPhone 12 Pro (Max). The primary camera of the iPhone 13 Pro will probably get a larger sensor, identical to that of the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Other than that, there doesn’t seem to be much change in the main camera. The improvement is mainly in the ultra-wide-angle lens. It probably lets in much more light on the Pro models. This camera will also have autofocus and image stabilization for the first time. That should ensure better and sharper photos.
Last year, Apple introduced ProRAW, which allows you to edit photos more beautifully. Maybe the same will happen with video this year. ProRes should make it possible for professionals to shoot movies in higher quality. Furthermore, the portrait mode on the Pro models would work better, because Apple will make more use of the LiDAR scanner. It can estimate distances and therefore knows which part of the photo should be out of focus.
