Top 10: Electric cars with the longest range

The Lucid Air has an official EPA range, making it the electric car with the longest range in one fell swoop. Time to see which cars the Lucid has in its wake for that matter.

According to the American environmental agency EPA, which is charged with determining the maximum achievable driving range in the United States, the Lucid Air Dream Edition can travel a maximum of 837 kilometers with a full battery. A new record for a production car. You should also be able to cover many hundreds of kilometers with the other versions of the model. The tone has thus been set by the young company and it is in any case at the top in terms of driving range.

In second place we currently find the Mercedes-Benz EQS. In the correct version, this will reach a maximum distance of 770 kilometers. The smaller brother of the EQS, the Mercedes-Benz EQE, covers 660 kilometers and completes the podium. This car will be on the market in the middle of next year.

Tesla has long been a frontrunner when it comes to maximum driving range. Now we find the brand back in fourth place. According to Tesla, the Tesla Model S Long Range will reach 652 kilometers. The BMW iX 50 and the i4 40 can cover 630 and 590 kilometers respectively. The Tesla Model 3 Long Range is neatly in between with 614 kilometers, just like the Ford Mustang Mach-E with the largest battery pack (610 kilometers).

For all models, of course, the actual range depends on, among other things, the driving style, outside temperature, speed and environment. In addition, there is no WLTP measurement for the Lucid Air, but on the whole it is even higher than the EPA measurement. The website Electrek once calculated that the WLTP range is on average 1.12 times higher than that according to the EPA test. Then the Lucid Air would even have a WLTP range of more than 937 kilometers.

Chinese brands with old test cycle

Many new Chinese brands often display at least as impressive numbers. The Xpeng P7, which is now for sale in Norway, would be 706 kilometers away. NIO states that you can easily reach 1,000 kilometers with the new ET7. The ‘problem’ with the numbers is that they come out of the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). This is an outdated test method that gives results that are not very realistic in practice. NEDC was relieved by the WLTP in 2017.
