Lamborghini presents the Countach LP 500 for the second time in 50 years. It has built a 1-to-1 replica of the original Countach prototype.
A few weeks ago, Lamborghini was secretive about a classic that would breathe new life into it. All the hints together pointed us to the Lamborghini Countach LP 500 from 1971 and that turns out to be completely correct. The model that started it all for the Countach is back.
Of course, this is not a modern Lamborghini with references to the old Countach, as is the case with the new Countach LPI 800-4. No, this is really a Countach LP 500 as accurately as possible copied down to the last screw as Lamborghini built in 1971. There are two logical reasons for the Italian manufacturer to do this: the original appeared for 50 years, so that’s worth celebrating, but the original (from photo 4) is simply no longer there. It was sacrificed in 1974 for crash tests for the production Countach. Especially the latter makes it extra cool what Lamborghini has done: it has put a no longer existing car on the road completely new.
The original 1971 Lamborghini Countach LP 500
Lamborghini has used parts that were still stored as much as possible. As you will understand, that was not much in the case of a prototype. So a lot has been made completely new based on the blueprints of the past. The color matching turned out to be extra complicated because there are only photos of the original. After a thorough analysis, Lamborghini found out that it had to be ‘Giallo Fly Speciale’. It does indeed look a lot like it.
Incidentally, the Countach changed quite a bit before it appeared on the market in 1974. For example, the first series of the Countach became the LP 400, the Italians had reduced the V12 from 5 to 4 liters. There were also some more enthusiastic cooling openings in the carriage. Anything to make things more reliable. With this new Countach LP 500, the reliability is probably not quite good, but undoubtedly it will only cover a few kilometers anyway. It really depends on what the owner is going to do with it. The Countach LP 500 was commissioned by ‘a well-known collector’ and therefore does not stay with Lamborghini.
