Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi will begin mass production of electric cars in the first half of 2024, director Lei Jun said on Tuesday.
Xiaomi extensively revealed in September that it is entering the world of car production. For this, subsidiary Xiaomi EV was founded. The smartphone maker will invest approximately €8.5 billion in Xiaomi EV over the next ten years. Xiaomi has not yet announced whether it will produce the cars entirely itself or whether the company will partner with an existing car manufacturer.
Recently, reports from Cnevpost.com that Xiaomi may have wanted to get started with its own cars on the remains of Borgward. The first model would then appear in 2023. So it appears to start a little later and it is therefore still the question of how Xiaomi will approach it exactly. In any case, the Chinese company joins a growing list of tech companies that are entering the car industry. The companies are counting on cars being increasingly connected to each other and to other things such as traffic lights. They also expect the vehicles to drive increasingly autonomously. As a result, the tech companies see an opportunity to compete with existing car manufacturers.
