In November 1952 Rudolf Slansky and 13 other functionaries of the Czechoslovak Communist Party were charged with conspiracy in Prague. The process was part of a veritable wave of purges in the communist parties of the Eastern Bloc. Ideological and ethnic conflicts, Germanophobic, revolutionary and anti-Semitic reflexes as well as paranoia and the fear of imperialist agents and subversive elements resulted in a ludicrous and tragic trial against the former general secretary of the communist party Slansky and his supposed cronies.
