Every now and then you see yellow Post-it leaves sticking to the side of a computer screen. And there are a lot of to-do apps doing the rounds to help you remember things. But of course there is the digital alternative: Sticky Notes. And while that app feels a bit old-fashioned, those virtual post-its can do more than what most people think.
If you come across something that you want to remember, then you would like to record it in the digital version of the well-known colored Post-it stickers. Sticky Notes is one such app that people can understand at a glance by recognizing the paper cat bell, but because of that, they sometimes miss out on some underlying features that make life easier.
Making up
Sticky Notes is pre-installed in the system. You type the search query in the Start menu Sticky Notes and there appears the familiar tool with the basic buttons at the bottom. Lets you format text in bold, italics, underlined, and strikethrough. Next to it is the button to turn the bullets on and off. And the last button is for adding an image in the note. You can delete the note or view the list of all notes via the three-dot menu in the top right corner. And the plus icon in the top left corner creates a new sticky note. Double click on a note’s bar to maximize it, repeat to minimize the note.
Shortcut keys
You can of course also use keyboard shortcuts instead of the buttons at the bottom. Those keyboard shortcuts largely match those of Microsoft Become. They are also easy to remember. Select the text and then use one of the keyboard shortcuts:
Bold: Ctrl+B
Italic (Italic): Ctrl+I
Underlined (Underlined): Ctrl+U
Strikethrough: Ctrl+T
Bulleted List (List): Ctrl+Shift+L
Close current note: Ctrl+W
Delete (Delete): CTRL+D.
On taskbar
If there is one program that we recommend pinning to the taskbar, it is Sticky Notes. That way you always have it within reach. Once you’ve opened the program, right-click on the icon in the taskbar and choose Pin to taskbar. From there, open and hide all notes with the right mouse button and quickly create a new note. You can also access the program’s settings faster from the taskbar. Otherwise, you’ll first need to go to the Sticky Notes List from an open Sticky Note to find the Settings there in the top right corner.
List of notes
When you close a note by clicking the cross in the top right corner, it disappears from the desktop, but remains available in the note list. The note list contains every cat bell you’ve ever created that you haven’t permanently deleted. You can bring a collapsed note back to the desktop by right-clicking on it and Open note to select. In the same way you can do the command Delete note select. The list has a handy search box to quickly find a specific note, even if you have a lot of sticky notes. You just start typing and the sticky notes that match the keywords will appear in the overview. The related notes immediately scroll up. So you don’t have to Enter to push.
On a separate desktop
When you create a new sticky note, it appears next to the previous notes. You adjust the size by clicking and dragging the border of the notes. You can also stack notes to save desktop space. It is not possible to track Sticky Notes over all other applications. If you want a clean desktop, you can create a completely separate Sticky Note desktop. To do this, press Windows key+Tab to Windows 10 Task view and create virtual desktops. Then click on New desktop at the top of the screen. Dragging memos onto the second desktop prevents the main workspace from looking cluttered. When you’re done, press back Windows key+Tab and select the first desktop. With the hotkey Ctrl+Windows Key+Left Arrow and Ctrl+Windows Key+Right Arrow you can easily switch between the desktops.
Insights
In the notes list, there is a gear icon in the top right to go to the Institutions to go. there you can Insights switch. Normally this feature is turned on, but if you want to prevent Microsoft from reading your notes, you can turn it off. Through Insights e-mail addresses and web addresses are automatically turned blue and thus made clickable. If you click after such an address, a bar will appear at the bottom of the memo with the email address or web address, asking if Sticky Notes can open the link. The option Confirm before delete Provides a confirmation pop-up when you delete a note. That way you avoid accidentally deleting sticky notes. Bee Colour choose the color scheme (light, dark, or my Windows mode) that fits your overall Windows theme.
Colour
Click the three dots on the right to change the color of a note. The colors not only make the notes more beautiful, you also use them to recognize the category of the note. For example, you can choose yellow notes for professional memos, pink for private things and blue for financial reminders. The app also supports touchscreens and drawing tablets. So feel free to write or draw on a note as you would on regular paper. Each note can contain either typed text or something drawn with a pen or stylus. A combination of both is not possible.
To share
Sticky notes become even more useful when you share them across all the devices you use. To sync memos with other Windows 10 computers, all you need to do is sign in on both computers with the same Microsoft account. This also applies to your mobile phone, Android or iPhone. Install the mobile version of Microsoft OneNote. When you open the app you will see the button at the bottom right Sticky Notes. Anything you add, delete, or edit here will be synced to the notes on your desktop’s desktop. This is, for example, super handy to make a to-do or shopping list at home and then take it with you on your mobile while on the go.
To recover
If you’re not in your head for a while, it’s possible that you accidentally delete a note. Fortunately, you can still recover this via a rather unusual way. You do not restore a sticky note in the program itself, but online in www.outlook.live.com. Of course you have to sign in again with your Microsoft account. In the left menu you can look in the group Deleted items and there are not only the deleted e-mail messages but also the deleted memos. At the top you read that the items in this folder will be deleted in thirty days. Select the notes you want to fix, right click on them and then choose To recover. The recovered sticky notes will not automatically appear on the desktop yet. To do that, you need to close the Sticky Notes app and open it again. Then go to the List of notes and there you will see all recovered notes. Double-click the notes so that they reappear on the desktop. If that doesn’t happen, move on to plan B.
Plan B: Sync
The deleted notes will be recovered from the cloud and this may take a while. If you don’t have the patience to wait for this, you can give the recovery process a boost. Go to the List of notes and click on the gear icon at the top right. There you will see the option Sync to stand. Click this button and the app will retrieve the recovered notes from the cloud. Now you can go back to the overview and all notes should be back in place.
Automatic startup
If you want the sticky notes to remain visible the next time you boot, just leave them open when you shut down the PC. if you’re with them Task view placed on a virtual desktop, they never get in the way. And of course it is possible to add the app to the applications that start up along with the system. First you create a shortcut of the app for this. Find the application in the menu Start and drag the icon onto the desktop. This will cause the system to automatically create a shortcut. Then type in the search field at Start the text %programdata%. The search function shows a file folder. click on To open and continue in the map ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup or
C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartUp. Drag the shortcut in there and you’re done.
backup
The most obvious and efficient way to back up your Sticky Notes is with the app’s built-in sync. Make sure you are logged in to Windows 10 with an active Microsoft account. Open the notes and sync. There is also a more complicated way of making a copy of the SQLite database files. You can copy the files to any other folder, external drive, or online storage service for safekeeping. Open C:UsersdirkAppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalState and copy the three files: plum.sqlite, plum.sqlite-shm and plum.sqlite-wal . Stick it in a safe place. If you later put these three back in their location, you’ll have your trusted notes back on the same computer or on a different Windows 10 PC.
