In Europe, the traditional MPV is completely extinct except for a handful of models. Outside the European borders, the space giants are still very popular. Buick proves that by showing not one, but two futuristic previews of new MPVs.
The Guangzhou International Motor Show is currently underway in China, a car show where the Chinese branch of Buick presents two extravagant MPVs, one of which is much more concrete than the other.
Buick GL8 Concept
The most realistic show car that Buick presents in China is the GL8 Concept. With this study model, the American manufacturer shows how it envisions the future of its largest MPV – the GL8. Remarkable fact: Buick says that it proves with the GL8 Concept that it will simply continue to focus on the development of MPVs positioned relatively high in the market in the coming years.
Buick GL8 Concept
The GL8 Concept has strikingly bare flanks. Its fierce nose with its sharply drawn headlights, immense grille and silver accents are in considerable contrast. Also on the back of the huge concept car we see a large silver-colored surface that is partly framed by boomerang-shaped taillights. The interior of the show car should be taken less seriously. Here we see very strikingly designed furniture that we will probably not see again in the production version of this MPV. It is almost certain that there will be a new GL8. Buick has sold about 1.5 million MPVs with that name in 22 years, spread over various GL8 generations.
Smart Pod Concept
From relatively concrete we move on to the Smart Pod Concept, according to Buick a “bold vision of future business transport”. The piece of automotive future music certainly looks striking.

The electrically powered show car is fully autonomous and has an interior that includes a folding screen and a 50-inch measuring screen that also functions as a backrest for extra seating. In the interior we also find beautiful-looking materials, two seats that would not look out of place in a private jet and even a couple of plants. According to Buick, the whole is made of durable and lightweight materials.
