In a WhatsApp conversation you quickly collect a lot of images, files and videos. In the Settings, see how much space each conversation takes up and delete files if necessary.
View WhatsApp storage
In WhatsApp you receive all kinds of messages. Sometimes this also includes photos, videos and files. Over the years it can become quite a collection. Creating order is therefore easier said than done. From one conversation everything may be in the trash, other images should certainly not be removed.
It is therefore handy that there is a function in WhatsApp that gives the user more insight into the storage. A number of statistics quickly make clear how many MB or GB of files are stored per conversation. From there, search for images or delete a bunch of unnecessary files.
WhatsApp storage in iOS
On iOS it works like this:
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap on Institutions.
- Tap on Storage and data.
- Tap on Manage storage.
WhatsApp storage in Android
To view the storage on an Android device:

- Tap the three dots > Institutions.
- Tap on Storage and data.
- Tap on Manage Storage.
View or delete files
From ‘Manage storage’ you will see an overview of all media on the phone. Under ‘Check and remove items’ you will find files that can possibly be removed.
- Under ‘Frequently forwarded’ you will find messages that have been forwarded (to or by you) before, for example funny pictures. Often less important to keep. Tap and hold a file. Tap on multiple files if necessary. Then tap the trash can icon.
- ‘Larger than 5 MB’ lists the largest files. Thus, the greatest success can be achieved. Again, you can tap and hold the file, then tap the trash can.
A little below that you can see what is saved per conversation.
- Tap a conversation to see the saved media.
- Sort by newest, oldest or largest.
- You can decide for each file what you want to do:
