Apple seems to be working again on a charging mat that is able to charge your iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch at the same time. It should also be possible in the future to charge devices by placing them on the back of the iPhone.
Apple: three-in-one wireless charger
This reports the reliable Mark Gurman of Bloomberg in its weekly newsletter. The Apple insider thinks Apple is still working on a multi-device charger. He does not provide more details, but we expect it to be a charging mat with which you can charge the iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch.
In September 2017, Apple already presented such a product: the AirPower. It had something unique. The inside was made up of three layers of coils, so it didn’t matter where you put the device, it charged everywhere. It was something no other company had attempted.
Later it became clear why. Challenges with overheating and other technical hurdles made the AirPower never appear. In March 2019, Apple finally pulled the plug on the project. But Apple still seems to have plans to launch its own multi-device charger.
Ambitious plans
When it comes to wireless charging technology, Apple also has more ambitious plans, Gurman knows. For example, Apple would like to develop wireless chargers for long distances. You don’t have to put your iPhone on a mat somewhere, but it already charges your device if you have it in your pocket, for example.

Also, Apple devices should be able to charge each other in the future. “Imagine an iPad charging an iPhone, which in turn charges another iPhone, AirPods, or an Apple Watch,” Gurman writes. This technique is called reverse wireless charging. It’s been rumored for years that it’s coming to the iPhone, but the latest iPhone models don’t support it yet.
