Used car sales break all records

2021 looks set to be the year in which more than 1.3 million used cars were sold by car companies for the first time. Bovag and RDC express this expectation based on the most recent sales figures for used cars.

Up to and including November 1,232,335 used cars have already been sold in the Netherlands by car companies. That is four percent more than in the first 11 months of 2020. In fact, it is only a fraction less than were sold in all of 2020. Last year, car companies sold 1,285,166 used passenger cars.

Although car companies are seeing an increase in used car sales, private individuals are actually trading fewer second-hand cars among themselves. In the first 11 months of this year, private individuals sold 621,000 used passenger cars, 9 percent less than in 2020. Bovag and RDC aim to eventually sell around 675,000 used passenger cars by 2021, making 2021 the second year since 2007 that those cars have been sold. sales counter ends below 700,000 units.

The high demand for used cars is easy to explain. On the one hand, car manufacturers are suffering from the worldwide shortage of computer chips, with limited production and limited stock as a result. On the other hand, the demand for individual transport has increased as a result of the pandemic.
