Huawei P50 Pocket official: Huawei’s first folding folding phone

The Huawei P50 Pocket has been officially announced. This is the company’s first ever folding clamshell phone and a direct competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Motorola Razr 5G.

Huawei P50 Pocket is a compact folding phone

The Huawei P50 Pocket is a folding phone in a modern jacket that can be closed. The phone fits into the clamshell foldables category that includes the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Moto Razr 5G. So it is a smaller foldable phone made of premium materials and an interesting design.

Two round cutouts at the back

For example, there are two round recesses at the back of which the top one protrudes slightly. That’s where the cameras are. The lower cutout houses the second screen of the phone. That is a small screen, where you can quickly view the time or notifications, for example. You can also use the screen as a frame when taking a selfie. This secondary display measures 1.04 inches and has a resolution of 340 x 340.

The screen on the inside is 6.9 inches. This is an OLED panel with a resolution of 2790 x 1188 pixels, which equates to an aspect ratio of 21:9. The screen has a refresh rate of 120 Hz for the smooth display of images. According to Huawei, the hinge that folds the main screen has no cutouts.

Specifications

The Huawei P50 Pocket has a Snapdragon 888 with 4G as the engine, so no 5G. That’s not Qualcomm’s latest chipset but should nevertheless be powerful enough to run tasks without any problems. We also see a 4,000mAh battery, which is significantly larger than the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s 3,300mAh capacity. This battery supports 40W fast charging, but it’s unknown how long it will take for the phone to reach full capacity.

The round camera module of the P50 Pocket houses a triple camera system:

  • 40 MP main camera (26mm, f/1.8)
  • 13 MP ultra wide-angle camera (13 mm, f/2.2, 120 degrees)
  • 2 MP “super spectrum” sensor (30mm, f/1.8)
  • 10.7MP selfie camera

The ultra-wide-angle camera doubles as a macro camera, and the ‘super spectrum’ sensor can check whether you’ve applied sunscreen correctly or whether you’ve removed your makeup. A review will have to show what this means to you in practice.

Other notable features include Harmony OS, a side fingerprint scanner, face unlock, dual SIM support, Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6, and NM card support. That’s a smaller form of a regular microSD, sort of like a nanoSD card.
